Honoring the WSPN Nonprofit Volunteer of the Year

"This is how we give back to those who gave us everything"

Jim Benzin, a U.S. Veteran, has spent more than 50 years advocating for and serving veterans—tirelessly supporting those who’ve given so much for our country. His dedication to Donka’s mission to empower people with disabilities, including veterans and seniors, is both deeply personal and remarkably impactful.

As a former teacher, Jim found ways to instill compassion and service in the next generation, even encouraging his students to collect items for veterans at the Hines VA Hospital. His commitment to veterans continues today through his unwavering volunteerism with Donka, where he plays an active role in the VETSO group, helping disabled veterans at the DuPage Care Center. For Jim, this work isn’t just important—it’s a duty. He believes, and frequently says, that “this is how we give back to those who have given us everything.”

Jim’s presence on our board is invaluable. He’s not just a name on a roster—he’s a tireless advocate, a trusted advisor, and an on-the-ground connector. He regularly networks within the Carol Stream and greater DuPage County community, spreading awareness about Donka’s services, mission, and impact. Whether speaking with business leaders, chatting with neighbors, or attending community events, Jim is always representing Donka with passion and purpose.

Jim dedicates countless hours reaching out to businesses for event sponsorships, collecting in-kind donations, and inviting individuals to give generously. His efforts have resulted in new donors, valuable community partnerships, and increased visibility for our programs. His credibility as a veteran and community member adds weight to his advocacy.

Jim exemplifies what it means to be a service leader. He brings heart, energy, and vision to every effort, and he has helped shape Donka’s growth and impact in just the three years he has served on our board. Jim’s lifelong service to veterans, his deep belief in our mission, and his relentless volunteer efforts make him not only an ideal candidate for Nonprofit Volunteer of the Year—but a living example of the best our community has to offer.
